Both lived-in color and traditional highlights can give you beautiful, dimensional hair — but they're achieved differently and suit different lifestyles. Here's how to know which is right for you.

What Is Lived-In Color?
Lived-in color (often achieved through balayage or a soft foilyage technique) is hand-painted to mimic the way hair naturally lightens in the sun. The result grows out seamlessly, with no harsh regrowth line, which means longer stretches between salon visits.
What Are Traditional Highlights?
Classic foil highlights create more uniform, consistent color from root to tip. They tend to be brighter and more dramatic, which some women love, but they also show regrowth more visibly and typically need touch-ups every 6-8 weeks.
Which One Fits Your Lifestyle?
If you want a low-maintenance look that ages gracefully between appointments, lived-in color is usually the better fit. If you want maximum brightness and don't mind more frequent visits, traditional highlights may be worth the extra upkeep.
